Distance education is rapidly changing that field education by allowing more learners the chance to receive an equal and valuable education. I have a master’s degree from a USM online program and I must admit it was extremely convenient for my lifestyle. Distance education provides a convenient and more structured way of learning. In terms of distance education for secondary school we will reach a lot more issues. Some advantages are; it provides access to education for people that need it due to issues that can keep them from participating in a physical education program such as family, jobs or physical limitations. Another advantage would be that it permits a more student center approach with a lot of collaboration opportunities. It also gives way to a lot of different views and resources because students from any location in the world can participate. A main disadvantage is that you have to be more independent and responsible to complete assignments on time. Another disadvantage is that it lacks that community learning effective like a regular classroom would provide. The students have limited chances to interact with the teachers and their peers. They lose that communication where they can participate in small talk and just the chance to learn from each other indirectly. I believable that distance learning should be use for special cases of students that really need it. I don’t believe in 100% online programs unless they are completely necessary. The emotional and social aspect of school is needed for growing teens. However an adult with a family and full time job can manage an online program. In the future I am sure we will continue to see a lot more online secondary schools being introduced to our society.

Distance education is awesome for those who are currently employed and want to obtain higher degrees. However, for secondary students, I concur with you that it may not be as effective. Secondary students are not usually self motivated and need a teacher to instruct them on what is to be done. With distance education, students have to extremely motivated to accomplish the workload. Additionally, secondary students need to learn to interact with their peers so they may be successful in all avenues of their lives. Online programs, like you said, fail to provide this opportunity. It will be very interesting to see how distance and online education progresses in the future. It is also interesting to think about how as teachers our roles may be expected to change in the future to adapt to new technology.
